A record-breaking 68,212 tickets were sold for Wednesday’s game between Mexico and Nigeria at the Georgia Dome. It was the most tickets sold for a soccer match in Atlanta’s history.

“Atlanta is a great city,” Mexico coach Miguel Herrera said. “The record was broken. The stadium was full.”

The event sold out Wednesday afternoon, filling the 68,000 seats in the bowl sections. The rest of the announced attendance came from suites that were purchased.

The previous mark of 54,229 was set in last year’s Gold Cup, which also featured Mexico.

The game is believed to have the second-highest attendance of the 53 international friendlies played on Wednesday. Only England’s match against Denmark at London’s Wembley Stadium sold more tickets (68,573).

Attendance was high in Atlanta because both teams will play in the World Cup this summer. Both rosters on Wednesday featured many of the players who are expected to compete in the tournament in Brazil. The World Cup will start June 12.

Here are the announced attendances for soccer games at the Dome since 2009:

March 5, 2014: Mexico vs. Nigeria, 68,212

2013: Gold Cup, 54,229

2009: Mexico vs. Venezuela, 51,115

2011: Mexico vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina, 50,507

2009: Club America vs. A.C. Milan, 50,306

2010: Club America vs. Manchester City, 33,271
