Serena Williams withdraws from French Open with injury

Serena Williams withdrew from her fourth-round French Open match against against Maria Sharapova due to an arm injury, USA Today reported Monday.

Williams, who beat Germany’s Julia Gorges Saturday to advance, was scheduled to play Sharapova Monday at Roland Garros.

The 23-time grand slam champion was playing in her first slam since giving birth to her daughter, Alexis.

“I’ve unfortunately been having issues with my (pectoral) muscle and unfortunately it’s been getting worse to the point where right now I can’t actually serve,” Williams said Monday.

 

Williams, 36,  has not committed about playing at Wimbleton, the next tennis slam event.
