Ok, so maybe vuvuzelas aren't OK at SEC games after all, associate commissioner Charles Bloom tells the AJC.
In a response to an email asking to confirm media reports that the loud horns used at FIFA World Cup games will be allowed at SEC games, Bloom wrote the following:
"Our policy allows for ‘traditional' artificial noisemakers to be allowed in stadiums and played during specific times. Other forms of artificial noisemakers are not allowed. I do not believe a vuvuzela is tied traditionally into one of our institutions."
By using the term "traditional," Bloom was talking about revamped guidelines that let Mississippi State football fans continue their tradition of ringing cowbells despite a ban on artificial noisemakers. The SEC signed off on a one-year compromise during the league's spring meetings in Destin, Fla.
The cowbells are limited to pregame, halftime, postgame, timeouts and following a score.
Earlier media reports has Bloom saying the following:
The vuvuzela, along with any artificial noisemaker, will fall under the revamped guidelines of the Mississippi State cowbell, according to SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom.
When asked about the conflicting information, Bloom responded with this:
"That is inaccurate. Vuvuzelas cannot be brought into the game per policy. Cowbells, since it is traditionally tied into one of our schools, can be brought in at that school."
