Falcons rookie Robert Alford will provide a weekly diary for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution this season.
The Hammond, La., native, who played at Southeastern Louisiana, recovered a forced fumble in overtime to help the Falcons pull out a 34-31 victory over Buffalo last week in Toronto. This week, he’s getting ready to make his first trip to historic Lambeau Field to face the Green Bay Packers.
Here’s his latest installment, as told to D. Orlando Ledbetter.
It was real good to come away with a victory and have a Victory Monday (a day off). We just had to come in and watch some film.
Coach talked to me about the lateral to Desmond Trufant. Both of us are real fast guys. We both ran 4.3s at the combine. It worked out.
I just play with whatever comes to my head. Whatever I need to do to win is what I’ll do as long as it’s the right thing to do.
It was just a situation where we were trying to make a play. During that week (before the game) we had a takeaway circuit where everybody was punching the ball out and stripping it. I think that came in handy at the right time.
I just been sitting back and looking at the veterans. I’ve been studying more film and focusing on myself and the things that I need to work on to be a better player.
Whenever I’m on the field I always expect the ball to come to me. I was always taught that whenever you don’t think the ball is going to come your way, it’s going to come your way. You don’t want to be shocked. Pretty much, you just always have to play with a chip on your shoulder and always expect the ball to be in your vicinity.
I have heard about (Lambeau Field). I’m looking forward to it, and I know that it’s real cold. But that’s something that I’m not worried about. I’m just worried about going up there and helping my team get a win.
