Professional golfers Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are planning a $10 million, winner-take-all, 18-hole match-play that will be broadcast on national television, according to a report by Golf.com's Alan Shipnuck.
The idea was first voiced by Mickelson, who is ranked 20th in world rankings, at the 2018 Masters and later garnered the support of Woods, who sits at 67th.
“It's a ridiculous amount of money,” Mickelson said, according to Shipnuck. “No matter how much money you have, this amount will take both of us out of our comfort zone.”
The date for the event was not reported, but Mickelson told Shipnuck the match was originally scheduled for July 3 before being pushed back.
After the 2018 Masters, Woods and Mickelson paired up at the Players where the idea gained more traction, according to Shipnuck.
“The excitement that's been going on around here, it gets me thinking: Why don't we just bypass all the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have kind of a high-stakes, winner-take-all match,” Mickelson said at the Players, according to Shipnuck. “Now, I don't know if (Woods) wants a piece of me, but I just think it would be something that would be really fun for us to do, and I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round.”
