Just shy of the two-mile mark, Stuart Miller and his friends were serving up a unique refreshment – popsicles. The group had two shopping carts full of popsicles that they offered to passing runners. Miller said he bought 2,500 of the plastic-encased frozen treats.
“Just a little pick-me-up,” Miller said. “The runners seem to love it.”
At one of the official water stops near the one-mile mark, volunteer Deb Bryan gamely handed out water while standing on a broken foot. Bryan’s foot was encased in a walking boot and kept dry by a plastic cover. It was worth the discomfort.
“I’ve heard more thank you’s today than I probably have heard in a year,” Bryan said.
