Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner was named to Sports' Illustrated 2017 Effy Awards list on Monday, a lit celebrating the best coaching performances of the year.
Pasnter was named “Best at Beating SI’s Projections” in a major conference.
Writer Luke Winn writes, “Last fall, a certain member of the punditry made the now-infamous claim that Pastner was presiding over one of the worst major-conference rosters ever. SI's projection system wasn't that harsh, but it didn't love the Yellow Jackets, ranking them 204th in the preseason.
“Pastner proceeded to build the nation's No. 6-ranked defense around rim-protector Ben Lammers. That helped Tech upset North Carolina, Notre Dame, Florida State and Syracuse in the regular season, finish as the NIT runner-up and rank 77th in efficiency.”
The “now-infamous claim” Winn referenced was a tweet by CBS Sports Insider Jon Rothstein from October.
Pastner and the Yellow Jackets finished the regular season 18-14 and 21-16 overall.
