The Kennesaw State men’s golf team is in first place after the first round of the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C.
The Owls shot a 6-under-par 282 to stand three strokes ahead of Virginia Tech atop the 22-team leaderboard. Clemson is third at 1-under.
Junior Matt Nagy is in third place individually, shooting a 4-under 68 in the first round, three strokes behind leader William Sjaichudin of Purdue.
Swimming and diving
Georgia’s women’s swim team is in second place entering today’s final round of the NCAA championships in Austin, Texas. Allison Schmitt defended her title in the 200 freestyle with a school-record time of 1:42.08, then helped Georgia win the 800 freestyle relay.
Baseball
Georgia Tech 9, N.C. State 2: The Yellow Jackets (15-4, 4-0 ACC) scored eight of their runs after the fifth inning to push their winning streak to 10 games. Mark Pope allowed three hits and one unearned run in eight innings against the Wolfpack (10-8, 1-3 ACC).
Georgia 4, South Carolina 2: Alex Wood held defending national champion South Carolina (12-4, 0-1 SEC) to two runs in 8⅓ innings in Columbia, S.C. Tyler Maloof earned his SEC-leading seventh save for the Bulldogs (9-9, 1-0).
Georgia State 17, Murray State 6: Mark Micowski had four hits and five RBIs to lead the host Panthers (16-4), who had an 8-0 lead after three innings against Murray State (8-9). Their 17 runs and 19 hits were a season high.
Kennesaw State 11, Lipscomb 7: Andy Chriscaden had three hits, including a three-run homer, and a career-high five RBIs against visiting Lipscomb (7-11, 0-1 A-Sun). The Owls (12-8, 5-2) scored six runs in the fourth inning.
Softball
Georgia Tech 5, Lipscomb 1: Hope Rush went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs at the plate and pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and three hits at the Chanticleer Challenge in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Yellow Jackets (21-4) stretched their winning streak to 14 games with their second win of the day, a 12-0 victory over Coastal Carolina (14-8). Rush also had a homer against the Chanticleers.
Alabama 2, Georgia 1: Kelsi Dunne carried a no-hitter into the sixth as the host Crimson Tide (27-1, 3-0 SEC) held on to beat Georgia (23-2, 5-1).
Georgia State 3, Kennesaw State 1: McCall Langford had a no-hitter through five innings as the Panthers swept a doubleheader. Langford finished with one hit in six innings with no walks and five strikeouts. In their early game, the Panthers (13-14) got an RBI double from Brenna Morrissey, in a 1-0 win over the Owls (13-9).
Tennis
● Kennesaw State’s women’s team pulled out a 4-3 conference victory over host Jacksonville (10-4, 1-3 A-Sun). The win moves them to third place in the Atlantic Sun, half a game behind Stetson. The match came down to No. 4 singles, where Agatha Palider defeated Jacksonville’s Natalia Melibeu 6-2, 7-5 to clinch the victory for the Owls (14-3, 4-1).
● The Kennesaw State men set a program record with their eighth victory of the season, 4-3 against host Jacksonville. The Owls (8-7, 3-2 A-Sun) also earned their most-ever conference victories by beating the Dolphins (2-11, 0-4).
Track and field
Georgia’s track and field teams combined for 14 wins on the first day of the Georgia Intercollegiate Invitational at Georgia Tech.
