David Ragan, who is from Unadilla and considers Atlanta Motor Speedway his home track, will provide a daily diary leading to Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at AMS. Thursday’s entry:
It was a cold night here in Atlanta. I just kind of hung out this morning. My wife, Jacquelyn, and daughter, Julia, stayed home this weekend, so I’m kind of a bachelor.
I ate a little cereal for breakfast, hung out in my motor home and just read through some notes.
There was a lot of anticipation growing for the day’s practice. As the day rolled on I met with Adam Stevens, the crew chief, as they unloaded the No. 18 M&M’s Camry.
I couldn’t wait to hit the track and make some laps. We made a lot of laps, learned a lot.
We had a fast race car. I think we have a good race car for this weekend. We still have a lot of work to do on Friday and Saturday, but I couldn’t be more happy with the way the day went. I didn’t put a scratch on the car. We’ve got a few things we learned that are really going to help us on Sunday afternoon.
Obviously a lot of folks in the media wanted to talk and say a few things, so we went in the media center after practice. I basically told them a few of the events that happened this week leading up to me being in the (No.) 18 car this week and for a few weeks.
It’s always great to see people that covered me when I was younger. I miss (former WSB radio traffic and NASCAR reporter) Captain Herb Emory. I really wish he could have been here so I could have talked to him a little bit. He was one of the guys I thought about when I walked into the media center.
I’m planning to lay low tonight, and think about what happened (Thursday), rest and get ready for a busy Friday.
