Hollis is the second prominent official from Michigan State to leave the school this week in the wake of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal. Michigan State president Lou Anna Simon stepped down on Wednesday after repeated calls for her to resign.
Hollis' resignation comes days after Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics doctor who also was also employed by Michigan State, was sentenced to 40-to-175 years in prison for sexually abusing more than 150 girls and young women.
The NCAA opened an investigation on Tuesday into any rule violations the University might have violated in relation to the assaults.
Hollis graduated from Michigan State in 1985 and has been its athletic director since 2008. Hollis told reporters on Friday he will fully corporate with the NCAA’s inquiry.
Hollis' voice cracking as he is delivering his statement. "Let me be clear, in retirement, I will fully cooperate" with investigations into MSU by NCAA and Michigan attorney general office.
