Lewis Hamilton won the U.S. Grand Prix Sunday, clinching the world championship.

It’s his third world championship. On race radio, he told his team “This is the greatest moment of my life. … To my family, I love you all.”

Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg was second and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was third.

Elton John jumped on the podium to congratulate his fellow Brit. John is the featured entertainment at a concert tonight. Hamilton said he’d be at the concert to celebrate.

Hamilton successfully defended his championship in Austin. He was emotional at the finish, after he’d celebrated the victory with doughnuts around the track.

Hamilton qualified second Sunday morning in a rain-shortened session. Rosberg was on the pole.

Hamilton immediately passed Rosberg. Then through the mid part of the race, Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo led for several laps.

Hamilton had to outscore Vettel by at least nine points and beat Rosberg by two to clinch the title.

A win scores 25 points, with second place securing 18 and third, 15.
