Thrashers defenseman Boris Valabik will miss several weeks and could require surgery on his left ankle.

Valabik, who injured his left ankle after falling during practice on Monday, was wearing a walking boot on his left leg Wednesday.

“He’s got a problem with his tendon,” Thrashers coach John Anderson said. “We think he may need surgery. He’ll see the doctor later [Wednesday]. It’s not major, but the surgery they might do is supposed to speed up the healing.

“So we are looking at probably four weeks.”

Anderson said the tendon injury was to the upper ankle.

Valabik was a healthy scratch in the Thrashers’ season-opening victory on Saturday. The team is carrying eight defenseman on its 23-player roster.

In other Thrashers news:

Newly acquired defenseman Christoph Schubert may not be able to play Thursday at St. Louis because he is experiencing “immigration issues,” according to Anderson.

Ondrej Pavelec will start in goal Thursday. Anderson said a decision has not been made on who will start Saturday in Ottawa.
