• 1976: The Kansas City Scouts move to Denver and become the Colorado Rockies.

• 1978: The Cleveland Barons franchise - originally the California Golden Seals - is absorbed into the Minnesota North Stars organization.

• 1980: The Atlanta Flames move to Calgary; Atlanta is awarded an expansion team in 1999.

• 1982: The Colorado Rockies move to East Rutherford, N.J. and become the New Jersey Devils.

• 1991: The former Barons ownership splits off from the North Stars to return to the Bay Area with the expansion San Jose Sharks, comprising half the former North Stars' roster.

• 1993: The Minnesota North Stars move to Dallas and become the Stars; Minnesota is awarded an expansion team in 2000.

• 1995: The Quebec Nordiques move to Denver and become the Colorado Avalanche.

• 1996: The Winnipeg Jets move to Phoenix and become the Coyotes.

• 1997: The Hartford Whalers move corporate offices to Raleigh, N.C., and become the Carolina Hurricanes. For two years they play home games in Greensboro while an arena is under construction in Raleigh.
