Wesleyan has found a quarterback to succeed Conor Welton, who led the Wolves to the 2008 Class A state football championship and has signed a baseball scholarship with Georgia.
The new quarterback will be Andrew Frerking, a 6-foot-4, 190-pounder who drastically improved his footwork and technique during Wesleyan's spring football practice earlier this month.
"Andrew is tall, strong, and very bright," Wesleyan coach Franklin Pridgen said. "He makes few mistakes and is cool under pressure. His teammates and coaches are extremely comfortable with him at the helm."
Frerking, who will be a senior next season, won't have as much pressure as most new quarterbacks, as he will be surrounded by two returning All-State players: Offensive lineman David Andrews (6-4, 280) has committed to UGA, while tailback Kyle Karempelis (5-8, 170) has nearly 3,700 rushing yards and 60 touchdowns over his career.
Central Gwinnett
The Black Knights will debut their new offense for the public this weekend. The Lawrenceville school will have its spring football game at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Central has undergone many changes over the past couple of months under first-year coach Todd Wofford, who previously was an assistant at Gainesville. Wofford has installed the spread offense to replace the Wing-T.
"My biggest goal this spring has been to speed up the tempo of both the offense and defense," Wofford said. "These kids have worked really hard in the weight room over the last two months and are hungry to show what they can do."
Central, which previously had a winning season in 2006, returns 18 starters. Offensive lineman Jonathan Crowder (6-foot-2, 285 pounds) is an all-state candidate who possesses above-average quickness and strength. Linebacker Cameron Olds (5-8, 172) is extremely physical, and the Black Knights are trying to figure out a way to use him on offense, too.
Mill Creek
The Hochston school is a sleeping giant among the Gwinnett County powerhouses. The Hawks have one playoff appearance in the program's six-year history. Could they make it again in 2010?
Mill Creek has 14 returning starters, including at all of the skills positions. The team's best player may be fullback Tyler Cierski, who had 82 carries for 329 yards and four touchdowns. The 6-foot, 245-pounder has committed to Maryland.
Wide receiver Brandon Hayman (6-3, 185) had 55 catches for 724 yards and four touchdowns last season as a junior. Austin Hagan (6-0, 250) may be Gwinnett County's best "player" -- not top college prospect -- along the offensive line. He finished with a stunning 45 "pancake" blocks last season.
Sandy Creek
When Chip Walker led the Patriots to the Class AAAA state championship last season he made history. He was the younger half of the first father-and-son tandem to win state titles in Georgia. Rodney Walker earned a ring in 1984 with West Rome.
One of the Sandy Creek’s preseason scrimmages will be against Mary Persons, coached by Rodney. Are they preparing themselves for a possible high-stakes matchup in the playoffs? Because of the GHSA’s realignment, Sandy Creek has moved down to Class AAA, which also has Mary Persons as one of its member schools.
