Point of view: What type of football injuries are you noticing this year?

What type of injury among your football players has really caught your attention this year?

Marist coach Alan Chadwick: I would say shoulder injuries -- separated AC joints and stingers, with about eight of our players. You usually get them while tackling and blocking. I just think we're seeing more of these injuries because of the impact of the game. People are playing faster and throwing their bodies around. We're not as physically developed as we'd like to be. To avoid the shoulder injuries, we've got to continue working in the weight room in the shoulder and chest areas and continue to use proper technique when tackling and blocking. Sometimes the injuries have happened when our kids put their heads to the side, rather than keeping it up to see what you're hitting.

Miller Grove coach Damien Wimes: For us, it's groin injuries with about five players. I don't know if it has to do with our players not warming up properly before the games or our weight training. We've changed the way we stretch before games. I'm looking into our weight training before I got here, and I'm going to try to improve on it after the season. I think we have the problem under control. A groin injury affects the front of the hip area. It prevents a player from running at full stride and going full speed. These are big injuries for us because speed is our biggest asset. With the kids that are hurt, we're making sure they get the best care and treatment for it with physical therapy, and we limit their reps in practice.
