It looked like a matchup of the unstoppable versus the immovable when Pope traveled to Lambert for the Class A-AAAA state lacrosse championship. After 48 minutes, Lambert’s unstoppable offense overpowered Pope’s defense, winning 14-7.

Senior All-American attacker Adam Seal started the Longhorns’ offense by scoring on the Greyhounds’ senior All-American goalie Matt Sommerfeldt 47 seconds into the game. Seal, a High Point (N.C.) University signee, finished the first half with four goals. Junior attacker Corbin Jensen poured in three of his four goals in the first two quarters for Pope.

Lambert (21-1) led Pope (17-4) at the half 5-3 by keeping constant pressure on Sommerfeldt.

In the third, the Longhorns stretched the lead to 7-3 on a goal by senior midfielder Timmy Geran. Then, the visitors mounted their strongest charge of the night. Sophomore midfielder Brayton Wadella’s goal with 10:43 got Pope back to within one goal at 8-7, but that was the end of Pope’s scoring, and Seal quickly countered with his fifth and final goal less than a minute later.

The Longhorns won their school’s first state championship in any sport.
