High school sports notebook

Milton High is a top contender for a mythical national championship in high school basketball.

Milton is ranked in several national polls, including No. 2 overall in MaxPreps. Other Georgia teams in the same poll are Norcross at No. 8 and Miller Grove at No. 16.

"I think it's really good because it means that your program is recognized for what it has accomplished in the past," Milton coach David Boyd said. "It's a great compliment, but on the other hand, it's a double-edged sword because everybody wants to knock you off."

Milton is ranked No. 1 in another poll called Prep Nation.

Also, Columbia and Greater Atlanta Christian have appeared in various national rankings. All five Georgia teams are defending state champions in their respective classifications but Norcross, which lost to Milton in last year's Class AAAAA quarterfinals.

Hot-shot prospects

Milton won the championship in the state's largest classification and has all five starters returning. Three are ranked among the nation's top 100 college prospects: Power forward Julian Royal (committed to Georgia Tech), along with guards Dai-Jon Parker (Vanderbilt) and Shannon Scott (Ohio State).

Tech kept one at home, while Georgia finished as the runner-up for Parker and Royal.

"I think it all depends on how you look at it," Boyd said. "Georgia Tech is happy about getting Julian, and I think Georgia made a lot of strides. … I think with Georgia, it's just a matter of time before coach Mark Fox turns the whole thing around."

Fox and Tech coach Paul Hewitt still will follow Milton closely. Junior swingman Evan Nolte has offers from Tech and Georgia, while junior guard Shaquille Johnson has "high interest" from them.
