Former Griffin and Drew coach Jarrett Laws will replace the retiring Mike Earwood as head football coach at Our Lady of Mercy, a Class A private school in Fairburn.

“I tend to think that all things happen for a reason and God makes no mistakes,’’ said Laws, who was let go at Griffin, which he once called a dream job, after only two seasons. “I’m excited to broaden my horizons with an emerging program that’s been given such a strong foundation with Coach Earwood.’’

Laws had led Mount Zion of Jonesboro to the quarterfinals in 2008 before starting the program at Drew in 2009. Laws’ Griffin teams went 11-1 and 6-5. Griffin since has hired Antonio Andrews, an alumnus.

Our Lady was 34-28 in six seasons under Earwood, who finished with 216 career victories. The team was 4-6 last season.

Discovery hires former NFL player: Discovery, the newest high school in Gwinnett County, has promoted assistant coach and former NFL wide receiver Efrem Hill to replace Frank Hepler as head football coach. Hepler was hired at Forsyth Central in January.

Hill was Discovery’s wide receivers coach last season, when Discovery played a JV schedule. He played 10 seasons in the NFL, CFL and Arena Football League. Hill spend three seasons at Berkmar before coming to Discovery.

Discovery had been the only head coaching job open in Gwinnett until last week, when Grayson head coach Mickey Conn left to join the staff at Clemson.

Discovery will play a full region schedule this fall in Region 6-AAAAAAA, which includes North Gwinnett, Mill Creek, Collins Hill and Peachtree Ridge.

Two to play in McDonald's game: Alterique Gilbert of Miller Grove and Kobi Simmons of St. Francis will play in the McDonald's All-American basketball game Wednesday at the United Center in Chicago. The point guards will travel to Chicago on Saturday for five days of practice and events that include a dunk contest. Strangely, they will be on different teams. Gilbert, who has signed with Connecticut, will play for the West team while Simmons, who has signed with Arizona, will play for the East.
