Lovett, which suffered some of the state's worst flood damage to its football field, announced that it was moving Friday's home game to a different location.
Lovett, 5-0 and ranked No. 3 in Class AA, will play its rivalry game against Westminster (2-2) at Woodward Academy. The kickoff time remains the same — 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
"Due to recent damage at both Lovett and Westminster, the safe staging of an event the magnitude of ‘The Battle of Buckhead' is just not possible with such a short time to prepare the facilities," Lovett spokesman Perry McIntyre said on Tuesday.
Lovett's football stadium, which oversees the Chattahoochee River, had such shocking damage last week that you had to see it to believe it: The muddy water rose more than halfway up the goalposts.
The Lions won on the road against Cross Keys last week. After finding an alternative site for Friday's game, Lovett will not play at home again until Oct. 30 against Avondale, providing schools officials more than a month to repair the field.
"The grass areas surrounding the field remain in very poor condition, and the competition surface remains inaccessible to mowers, and other equipment required to prepare the field for play," Lovett athletics director Steve Franks said. "We also risk doing permanent damage to the field by rushing a process whose only real cure, at this point, is time."
