Basketball rankings: Redan's girls take No. 1 spot in AAAA

There’s a new No. 1 team in girls basketball this week as Redan of Stone Mountain climbed from No. 3 in Class AAAA following losses last week by Madison County and Southwest DeKalb.

Redan, the runner-up in Class AAAAA last season and AAAAA champion in 2009, won its three games last week by an average score of 79-27.

Madison County, the previous No. 1, fell to No. 6. The Red Raiders lost to Class AA No. 1 Buford 53-16 last week. Defending champion Southwest DeKalb, which beat Redan 60-58 last month, fell to No. 4 after a 54-42 loss to Class AAAAA No. 1 Norcross. Southwest DeKalb is 9-4 this season. Redan is 10-1 against Georgia opponents.

The other nine No. 1 teams in the boys and girls rankings remained the same, but there are 11 new teams in the rankings.

On the boys side, Newton and Walton replaced Shiloh and Savannah in AAAAA. Brunswick replaced Jonesboro in AAAA. Murray County, Lafayette and Henry County in AAA replaced Gainesville, Drew and Washington.

In the girls rankings, Bradwell Institute is No. 9 in AAAAA, replacing previously unbeaten Lowndes. In Class AAA, No. 6 Sandy Creek and No. 8 Grovetown earned their first rankings as Carrollton and Hephzibah fell out.

Thomasville is the new No. 8 team in Class AA after handing Westover (No. 9 in AAA) its first loss of the season. Calvary Day entered the Class A rankings at No. 8 as Athens Academy fell out.
