Funeral services set for Roswell football star Roper

Funeral services for Robbie Roper, the Roswell High football star who died this week, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Woodstock First Baptist Church, the Roper family announced Saturday on Roper’s Twitter account.

Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 9 pm. at Poole Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Roper, 18, died Wednesday after being hospitalized since Sunday in Gainesville, Fla. Roper reportedly was to undergo a routine surgery or a medical procedure. The Roper family has not disclosed the cause of death.

Roper was the Region 5-7A offensive player of the year after throwing for more than 3,000 yards for a top-10 team in Georgia’s highest classification. A senior, he had multiple scholarship offers.

Roper’s death has prompted an outpouring of support from across the country, including those from UMass and Florida, schools that had recruited him, along with UConn coach Jim Mora and Georgia Southern coach Clay Helton.

A member of Roper’s extended family has established a fund to help pay funeral expenses and to support a sports scholarship in his name.
