The first notable position change of the postseason appears to be underway at Georgia.

Tramel Terry, a freshman and former “Mr. Football” in the state of South Carolina, has been working the past two days with the Bulldogs’ defensive backs. This is notable since the 6-foot, 184-pound athlete spent the regular season working with Georgia’s wide receivers

“Tramel is full-time with the DBs right now,” senior wide receiver Rhett McGowan confirmed after Tuesday’s practice. “I think they’re just seeing how it goes. Knowing he’s redshirted, this is like an early spring practice for him over there. I guess they’re giving him a head start. I think they’re just trying to get him prepared so he’s not going into the spring completely lost.”

Requests to interview Terry were declined by UGA and neither Georgia coach Mark Richt nor any of the Bulldogs’ assistant coaches have been available since Terry started practicing with the defense.

Georgia certainly could use the help in the secondary. The Bulldogs finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in the SEC in passing yards allowed (232.8 pg) and pass efficiency defense (133.99). They were replacing four of five starters in the secondary from 2012.

Terry, meanwhile, played on both sides of the ball at Goose Creek High and signed with the Bulldogs as an “athlete.” He had 3,313 yards rushing and receiving and scored 40 touchdowns his final two years in high school.

Terry tore his ACL returning the opening kickoff of a high school all-star game last December and had to sit out this season at Georgia. But he has worked out with the receivers since preseason camp and was pretty much full speed by the second half of the regular season.

“I think it’s a good thing for him,” said McGowan, one of just two receivers the Bulldogs will lose next year. “He’s already learned receiver and he can always come back there. I think they’re just trying to give him an edge in case they need him on defense.”
