FLOWERY BRANCH — Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins, who's guided his team to a 2-2 record, spoke to the Atlanta media via conference call on Wednesday.
Here’s what he had to say:
Q: What was the key during that game-winning 15-play, 90-yard touchdown drive against the Eagles?
A: That was a big drive for us. It was a great way to finish the game. Most importantly, we got the win. We got back to 2-2. Now, we head to Atlanta to face a really good opponent that's on a roll in their environment. We have a great challenge ahead.
Q: Are you hoping to build on the win over the Eagles?
A: Yeah, it's all about getting back to work. We can't think about what's in the past. We have to keep moving forward. We certainly would like to reach 3-2 and get this win. The Falcons are not going to go away easily. We've got a great challenge and that's what it is every Sunday in this league.
Q: What do you see from the Falcons’ defense?
A: I see a great defense. It's well-coached. They know how to line up and they know what we are throwing at them. They'll be prepared. They've got good players. The fact that they're 4-0 says it all. You don't win games in the NFL unless you have a defense that gets it done. They've made plays and have been able to go against some good quarterbacks and stop them. It will be a great challenge for us.
Q: What was your relationship with coach Kyle Shanahan?
A: I was fortunate enough that they were the ones that drafted me and brought me here to Washington. I got to play for them (Kyle and his father Mike Shanahan) for two years. I felt like they were an outstanding. I'm not surprised at all to see the success they are having right now in Atlanta. He's always been well-respected, not just by me, but by everybody around the league for having a very, very good offensive mind. Now, that he has such a talented quarterback in Matt Ryan it's just a great fit. It will be a great test for our defense.
Q: Do you have a greater appreciation for tacking care of the football?
A: It's important to protect the football and give yourself an opportunity. When you turn the ball over, you kind of take away that opportunity. Whether if it is fumbles or interceptions, you have to protect the football and give yourself a chance.
Q: How are running backs Matt Jones and Alfred Morris playing?
A: Yeah, we feel really good about Alfred, Chris Thompson and Matt Jones. We have three good backs who can all make plays. They are pros and great teammates.
Q: How is the receiving corps coming along?
A: We've always felt like we've had depth at that position. It's always expected that you're going to have injuries and guys are going to be out for a time. It's so important that when you bring the next man in that he can still perform at a high level. Our expectations don't change whether if it's Pierre (Garcon), Ryan Grant, Derek Carrier, Anthony McCoy or whoever it may be. Andre Roberts or Jamison Crowder, we have guys who can catch the football and make plays. It's my job to be a distributor and put the ball in their hands.
Q: Can you wait for DeSean Jackson to return?
A: (Jackson returned to practice on Wednesday and was limited. He will possibly face the Falcons.) He's one of the best players on our football team. Anytime that you have a guy with a lot of talent you want him on the field. He can be a difference-maker when he's out there. We'll take him when he's ready. If he's not ready, we'll find a way with whoever is out there to be the best that we can be.
