NBC Sports said that Thomas has been officiating at the college level over the past few years and has worked camps and preseason games.

Shannon Eastin was the first to be on the field during a game. She worked when referees were locked out, and replacements were called in.

Thomas, according to Sports Illustrated, is from Mississippi and began her officiating career in high school.

She was the first woman to officiate a bowl game in 2009.
