FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons coach Dan Quinn is looking forward to helping out general manager Thomas Dimitroff and the scouting department this offseason.
Dimitroff will let Quinn know how the Falcons’ personnel department has a player ranked and Quinn will let them know exactly were the player would fit into roster.
Dimitroff retains final say over the player acquisitions and Quinn over the final 53-man roster. So, Dimitroff is still picking the groceries and Quinn is the roster chef.
“The best way that I can do it, is when I look at the players I try to say how can this player fit on our team the best,” Quinn said on Thursday. “Whether if it’s an offensive player or a defensive player, this is how he would fit on our team right now. This is how we’d try to use him. Whether if it’s a free agent, a draft pick or an undrafted free agent. That’s kind of the best part for me, how would he fit on our team currently?”
It helps that Quinn has a better understanding of his roster.
“I now have the luxury after a whole year of knowing exactly where we stand on our team,” Quinn said. “You could imagine last year, going in, you have a sense of what you think it might be, but now after going through it, I can’t want to get going because I have such a clear vision to help Thomas. “It’s a partnership that works out great for us.”
Quinn waived a lot of Dimitroff’s previous picks and free agent signees last season including cornerback Dezmen Southward, who was selected in the third round of the 2014 draft and right guard Jon Asamoah, who signed a five-year $22.5 million contract that included an $8 million in guarantee money in 2014.
He said that a lot of those moves were best on the players not being scheme fits.
