Jacksonville Jaguars running back Denard Robinson was found passed out behind the wheel of his Chevy Impala on Sunday while police said it was slipping into a pond.
According to police, Robinson was found in the car around 4:20 a.m. while its front end sunk into a retention pond, The Washington Post reported. Police said they knocked on the window to try to wake Robinson up, but he only responded by opening his eyes for a moment and returning to his slumber.
Marissa Staples, the passenger in the car, woke up and said "what's up" to police but attempted to roll it back up even after being informed of the situation. Police continued to knock on the vehicle's windows and were able to unlock the passenger door. Staples had to be pulled from the car after refusing to leave, the arrest report stated.
"The driver was passed out during this whole process. I was able to wake the driver but had to turn the vehicle off and remove his seatbelt. The driver thought he was on a road and did not want to exit the vehicle," the report said.
Police said Robinson, 25, was woken up after the vehicle was turned off and Staples was pulled from the car, Action News Jax reported. Police said Robinson finally exited through the passenger window when his door was submerged.
"The driver tried about three times to open the driver's door which was the side that was underwater," one officer stated in a police report. "I had to keep reminding the driver to climb out of the passenger side because his door was in the water. I had to tell the driver multiple times his car was in a pond and was sinking so he needed to hurry up and get out."
Robinson told police that he thought the vehicle was still on the road, which is why he didn’t exit.
Authorities said that Robinson was attempting to make a left turn and made a wide turn, "causing the vehicle to go over the sidewalk and down the embankment."
"There were no skid marks indicating the driver attempted to stop the vehicle before the crash," according to the report.
Robinson posted a note on Twitter saying that he was involved in a crash with no injuries, and the Jaguars issued a statement saying that they were aware of the incident.
A police officer determined that Robinson wasn't impaired, so no DUI charges were filed against him, according to ESPN.
Robinson was a fifth-round pick by the Jaguars in the 2013 NFL draft after playing at the University of Michigan, following a successful high school career at Deerfield Beach High School.
