Georgia State University announced Thursday that their inaugural football game at Georgia State Stadium -- converted from Turner Field, where the Braves played since 1997 -- will kick off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, and be televised on ESPN3. The Panthers will host non-conference foe Tennessee State.

That will be one of two Thursday night games at the Panthers’ new stadium, alongside a visit from Sun Belt Conference opponent South Alabama at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 26. That game will be televised on ESPNU.

Other high-profile games include trips to play Penn State in State College, Pa., on Sept. 16, and Charlotte on Sept. 23. Memphis will travel to play at Georgia State Stadium on Sept. 30, and Sun Belt Conference play will kick off two weeks later when the Panthers travel to University of Louisiana-Monroe.

Georgia State finished last season 3-9, 2-6, to tie for eighth in the Sun Belt. That followed a 6-7 season that ended in an AutoNation Cure Bowl loss to San Jose State. They’ll open 2017 with a new coach, Shawn Elliott, the former co-offensive coordinator and interim head coach at the University of South Carolina.
