1. An NFL rule change moved kickoffs up to the 35-yard line, and the Falcons would like to take advantage by limiting opposing returns. New kickoff man, rookie Matt Bosher, had limited success in the exhibition season putting kicks in the end zone. The Falcons could benefit quickly by limiting Bears’ return man Devin Hester in Week 1.

2. While the Falcons hope to limit opposing returners, they may be hurt by the new kickoff rule themselves. Eric Weems made the Pro Bowl last season on special teams. His 102-yard return for a touchdown against the Buccaneers last season was a game changer. The Falcons led the NFL last season with a 26.5-yard average.

3. Kicker Matt Bryant has a 62-yard field goal in his career. It will be interesting to see who the Falcons use for long attempts this season. Bryant’s only miss this exhibition season was a 54-yard attempt Sept. 1 against the Ravens. Will they trust Bosher with long attempts in the regular season?

4. Even with Weems as a return specialist, the Falcons could use others. Rookie Jacquizz Rodgers and Antone Smith had three exhibition kickoff returns. Dominique Franks returned five punts.

5. The Falcons have turned to Bosher. It will be important that he delivers directional kicks, hang time and the ability to pin opponents inside the 20-yard line — all things Michael Koenen excelled at.
