Falcons sign running back Smith to two-year extension

Former Florida State star was a key special-teamer

UPDATE:

Antone Smith signed a two-year $1.425 million contract extension. He received a $65,000 signing bonus, a base salary of $630,000 in 2013 and $730,000 in 2014.

Falcons backup running back and key special-teamer Antone  Smith was signed to a two-year contract extension on Tuesday.

Last season, Smith played in 13 games. He had four special teams tackles and helped the coverage units limit opponents to 9.3 yards per return and 22.2 yards per kickoff return.

Smith, who played at Florida State, was originally signed by Detroit as a college free agent on May 8, 2009. He was signed to the Falcons practice squad on October 21, 2009.

He was slated to be one of the Falcons' two restricted free agents. Tight end Michael Palmer is the other potential restricted free agent.

Cornerback Brent Grimes, safety William Moore, tackle Sam Baker, defensive end Lawrence Sidbury, tight end Tony Gonzalez, fullback Mike Cox, cornerback Chris Hope, center Todd McClure, quarterback Luke McCown, cornerback Christopher Owens, linebacker Mike Peterson, right guard Garrett Reynolds, offensive tackle Will Svitek and defensive tackle Vance Walker.

RESTRICTED FREE AGENT – Tight end Michael Palmer.

SALARY CAP UPDATE: NFLPA data has been updated with the cuts of Abraham, Turner and Robinson. Falcons are $21,198,650 under the cap, (pre Antone Smith deal).
