Falcons rookie safety Dez Southward left the exhibition game against Tennessee on Saturday with a head injury, the team said.

Southward went to the locker room in the third quarter. After the game Falcons coach Mike Smith confirmed that Southward suffered a head injury but said he had no update on his condition.

Southward is a third-round draft pick out of Wisconsin. Southward and Kemal Ishamel have served as the primary backups to safeties William Moore and Dwight Lowery.

The Falcons would be left thin at safety if Southward must miss significant time. Zeke Motta will miss at least the first six games of the regular season because of a neck injury.

The other safeties on the roster are Kimario McFadden, Tyrell Johnson and Sean Baker. All entered the league as college free agents: Baker in 2013 and McFadden and Johnson this year.

NFL teams must cut their rosters down from 90 to 75 players by Tuesday.
