Coach Mike Smith and the Falcons’ coaching staff were selected Thursday by the NFL to coach at the Senior Bowl the week of Jan. 20-25 in Mobile, Ala.

Smith has never coached in the game, but defensive coordinator Mike Nolan has been on a Senior Bowl staff nine times. The Falcons see it as an opportunity to study prospects who will be available in the draft, scheduled for May 8-10.

The Falcons will coach the North team, and the Jacksonville Jaguars staff will coach the South. It’s the third time the Falcons have coached in the game (1967, 1978).

“The week of practice provides a great opportunity to get to know these players on a personal level. …,” Smith said. “Being able to coach these young men will give us the ability to work hands-on with them and evaluate them.”

Also, the Falcons were denied permission by the Minnesota Vikings to interview offensive line coach Jeff Davidson, according to a Fox Sports report. The Falcons fired offensive line coaches Pat Hill and Paul Dunn on Monday.
