Former NBA star Dennis Rodman appeared on “Good Morning America” Tuesday to discuss the meeting Tuesday between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.
Rodman, who was in Singapore wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat during the interview, has gained notoriety for befriending Kim and meeting with the dictator several times since 2013.
During Tuesday’s interview, GMA co-anchor Michael Strahan asked Rodman why the basketball hall of famer chose to be in Singapore for the summit.
Rodman said his goal has always been to heal relations between North Korea, the United States and the world.
“I guess it gave me a little more, shine a light as far as knowing the fact that I did something pretty, pretty historical as far as bringing awareness to North Korea and some of the issues that (are) over there,” Rodman told Strahan. “I don’t look at (Kim) as a dictator, I look at him as a person who really want to try to blend in with the world and I try to convey that to people, but people look at me like I was out of my mind.”
Rodman went on to say he appreciated how President Trump listened regarding North Korea, while former President Barack Obama “pretty much blew me off.”
After Rodman referenced his relationship with Kim and gave an optimistic view of Kim’s willingness to work with the United States, Strahan grilled Rodman about Kim being a dictator and the human rights concern in North Korea.
“That’s just a matter of time,” Rodman responded. “I just think that people think this peace treaty or summit, whatever you want to call it, was going to change something overnight. No, I never said that. I said, ‘Just open the door. He wants to talk.’
“It take time to heal old wounds.”
