ATHENS -- University of Georgia president Michael Adams said Saturday the school did everything it could to get star wide receiver A.J. Green's suspension reduced, but Adams did not quarrel with the NCAA's rejection of the appeal.

“It’s certainly not too light,” Adams said of Green’s four-game suspension,”and yet I’m not in a position to criticize the NCAA. They are trying to send a message about contact with agents and agent runners and representatives.”

Green was suspended for selling his Independence Bowl jersey to a person the NCAA considers an agent, former North Carolina football player Chris Hawkins. An NCAA committee Friday rejected Georgia's attempt to get the suspension shortened.

“I don’t think A.J. knew what he was dealing with,” Adams said, meaning an agent. But the fact Hawkins met the NCAA definition of an agent is “part of why I believe they stuck with four games instead of less,” Adams said.

Adams, in an interview before Saturday’s game, said UGA got “the best counsel and advice you can get to make an appeal. ... I think the university did everything to help [Green] that the university could have done.”

Adams acknowledged it “clearly” would be against the rules for a player to sell a jersey to a non-agent as well.

“It was a mistake, and frankly I think it’s time to move on,” Adams said. “He’s a star player and an important player, I understand all of that. ... But you don’t build a whole season around one player.

“At the end of the year, maybe he’s fresher than some of the defensive backs that are covering him. I’ll try to look on the bright side.”

Adams on arrests

On another topic, Adams said he spoke to “every employee” of the Athletic Association in a recent staff meeting. His message, he said, was: “I want these arrests and off-field problems stopped.”

Nine players on the football have been arrested this year.

“They don’t like it any better than I do,” Adams said of the athletic-department staff, “and I think we’ll deal with it. We’re dealing with 19-year-olds, and we have more [arrests] in the general student body than I would like. But we have had too much in the football team. ... We need to fix that.”

Adams wasn’t specific on what steps should be taken. “I don’t tell them how to do their jobs, and they don’t tell me how to do mine,” he said. “And I think everybody is in sync now.”

Murray's day

Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray had a bandage on his chin after Saturday's game -- not surprising, considering that he was sacked six times by Arkansas.

Murray said his chin was scraped when his helmet was knocked off in the second quarter.

"You get hit," he said with a shrug. "It's football."

Murray completed 15 of 27 passes for 253 yards and one touchdown. He threw one interception.

On the game's final play after Arkansas took a 31-24 lead with 15 seconds remaining, Murray dropped back from the Georgia 36-yard line and heaved the ball about 70 yards into the end zone, where Razorbacks safety Tramain Thomas deflected it.

"We'll probably look at the film and say, "How close was that?'" UGA coach Mark Richt said.

Durham's numbers

Fifth-year senior receiver Kris Durham, whose role has increased in Green's absence, had a career-high five catches for 101 yards Saturday.

"I couldn't care less about the individual stuff," Durham said.

He had receptions of 46 and 35 yards on Georgia's two fourth-quarter scoring drives.

Etc.

Tanner Strickland and Sanders Commings got their first career starts -- Strickland at right guard in the absence of Chris Davis (knee and hip injuries)and Commings at cornerback in the absence of Branden Smith (concussion-like symptoms). ... Tailback Caleb King did not play for the second consecutive game because of a sprained ankle. Richt said he would be "shocked" if King isn't able to play Saturday against Mississippi State. ... Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino's synopsis of the day: "Wow, what a game." He added: "Beating Georgia was one of our goals before the season started." ... Petrino on Murray: "I thought their quarterback kept his poise. We got after him a lot."

Richt on his second-quarter decision to go for a first down, rather than punt, on fourth-and-a-foot from the Georgia 29: "I just believed we were going to make it, and maybe I thought, 'If not, maybe we don't deserve to win the game.'" Georgia made it on a Murray keeper. ... Georgia was 6-of-15 on third-down conversions and 2-of-3 on fourth-down conversions. ... Tavarres King's touchdown reception was the second of his career, both against Arkansas. ... Blair Walsh's 43-yard field goal in the third quarter makes him 5-of-5 on the season. ... After being penalized nine times for 55 yards in its first two games combined, Georgia had nine penalties for 53 yards Saturday. ... Ryan Mallett had his eighth 300-plus yard passing performance out of 16 games for Arkansas, his third in a row this season.
