Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson gave some hints Wednesday about which freshmen could burn their redshirts and play this season. None were a great surprise.
Johnson said that wide receiver Qua Searcy and B-back C.J. Leggett have stayed with the varsity, meaning the first through third stringers that typically will dress and be expected to play, and not been placed on the scout team. Searcy, who figures to be a backup, has impressed players and coaches throughout the preseason. Leggett was promising at the start of camp but missed time with an injury. He was actually injured again in Wednesday’s practice, however. He could be in the mix to back up starter Zach Laskey.
Another is offensive tackle Trey Klock, who was listed as the second-string right tackle when the depth chart was updated last week. Johnson said he is probably the only incoming freshman offensive lineman, of the six on the team, who will play this season. Quarterback Matthew Jordan is the third-string quarterback and with the varsity, but figures to be redshirted if possible to keep class separation between him and sophomore quarterback Justin Thomas.
Two others are defensive backs Lance and Lawrence Austin, who have second-string spots at nickel back and cornerback, respectively, according to defensive backs coach Joe Speed. Linebacker Terrell Lewis could play on special teams. Two other defensive players were on last week’s depth chart and will play, defensive ends KeShun Freeman and Tyler Merriweather. Final decisions on redshirts won’t be made until after the season begins.
