Five incoming freshmen, four on the defense, were placed on the team’s two-deep depth chart, updated and released Monday, two days after the team’s first scrimmage. Rush defensive end KeShun Freeman, who was already on the depth chart as a co-No. 1 after having enrolled early and earned a spot on the depth chart in the spring, was made the clear-cut starter.

Four freshmen who enrolled over the summer also made the list. Twin brothers Lance and Lawrence Austin were elevated to second-team cornerback, Tyler Merriweather earned the No. 2 strongside defensive end spot and Trey Klock was placed behind redshirt freshman Chris Griffin at right offensive tackle.

Another noteworthy change is that the defense was organized in a 4-3 alignment, a change from the 4-2-5 that it had been previously. Tech worked extensively on the four-lineman, two-linebacker, five-defensive back look in the spring, making it its base defense. The Jackets worked out of a 4-3 in Saturday’s scrimmage, a switch that defensive coordinator Ted Roof said was to “just keep a good mixture.”
