Add the SEC spring meetings to the long list of events canceled by the coronavirus pandemic.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey announced Tuesday that the four-day meetings, held annually since 1985 in Destin, Fla., during the last week of May, won’t happen this year.

The meetings “represent one of our conference’s great traditions,” Sankey said in a statement, but cancellation “is appropriate in the light of supporting safety and well-being during this unprecedented public health crisis.”

Presidents and chancellors of the SEC’s member universities typically attend the event, along with athletic directors, other administrators and football and basketball coaches. A wide array of conference business usually is on the agenda, and some athletes are honored at the event with awards.

The SEC said it will seek alternate methods this year for recognizing award winners and for holding meetings important to conference operations.

Before settling in Destin 35 years ago, the SEC spring meetings were held in various locations and formats.
