Georgia gets Alabama at home in 2015, then won’t return the game in Tuscaloosa until 2020.
The Bulldogs also won’t make their first trip to College Station to play Texas A&M until 2024. Those are just a couple of the details revealed on Monday as the SEC announced the new 12-year rotation of non-division opponents for football schedules through 2025.
“It is what it is,” Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity said Thursday. “There’s just no other way to formulate a schedule in that manner with so many considerations and so many teams. It takes years to rotate through and somebody’s going to have to be at the end of the time frame.”
Based on the new format, SEC schools will not play their non-rotating, non-divisional opponents in back-to-back years, as had been tradition. Dates have not yet been established.
Georgia travels to Ole Miss in 2016, gets Mississippi State at home in 2017, travels to LSU in 2018, plays Texas A&M at home in 2019, plays host to Arkansas in 2021, goes to Starkville to play Mississippi State in 2022 and gets Ole Miss in Athens in 2023. LSU, which played at Sanford Stadium this past September, won’t return until 2025.
Such are the realities of the of the 6-1-1 scheduling format the league voted to continue last month. Other than the six division opponents teams will play every year, they’ll play one permanent opponent annually from the other division and rotate the final spot between the other six teams.
Auburn, which Georgia has played annually since 1892, is its permanent Western Division opponent.
“It does provide some long-term scheduling information where we can now move forward filling spots for non-conference opponents,” McGarity said.
