Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott enters his junior season having already established himself as one of the top running quarterbacks in the SEC. In fact, although starting only seven of 13 games last season, he was the team’s leading rusher with 829 yards, 6.2 per carry.

Since last season, he has worked on his timing, his footwork and his deep throws in an effort to improve his passing game and make himself a top-tier dual-threat quarterback.

“I feel like I’ve gotten a lot better with my deeper passes,” Prescott said Tuesday at SEC Media Days.

“I think he’s a much better passer coming into this year than he was last year, working on the skill of throwing the ball and being comfortable in the pocket,” Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said.

Part of a two-quarterback system last season with senior Tyler Russell, who started five games and battled injuries, Prescott is now Mississippi State’s clear-cut No. 1 quarterback. “It’s different, knowing all the snaps are pretty much mine,” he said.

His goals are high: “I want to be winningest quarterback in Mississippi State history.”

He finished last season strong. Battling an elbow injury, he came off the sidelines to lead a fourth-quarter rally and an overtime victory over Ole Miss in the regular-season finale. Then he accounted for five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) in a Liberty Bowl victory over Rice.

For the season, he passed for 1,940 yards and accounted for 25 touchdowns — 10 passing, 13 rushing and two receiving.

“Dak is a guy that because of his skill set, he can beat you with his arm (and) with his legs,” Mullen said. “He can run between the tackles, and he can run in the open field. He has a lot going for him. But most importantly he has that will to win.”
