Coach Trent Miles said not too much should be read into the Georgia State depth chart released for Friday’s season-opening game against Charlotte at the Georgia Dome.
While Kyler Neal is listed as the starter at running back, Miles said he thinks all four running backs – Kendrick Dorn, Taz Bateman and Marcus Caffey – are all co-starters.
The same is true at wide receiver and along the offensive line, where Davis Moore and Jah-Mai Davidson are listed as starters along the right side. Miles said that Moore, Davidson, tackle Sebastian Willer and guard Alex Stoehr will all play. Stoehr started every game at right guard last season before undergoing back surgery in the offseason.
“I consider all four starters,” Miles said.
Moore, a 6-foot-4, 300 pound redshirt sophomore, said he moved into the first team at right guard by trying to focus on improving one thing each day, with a lot of attention paid to his footwork. Moore also cross-trains at left guard, but said he is more comfortable on the right.
Davidson, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound redshirt junior, said he moved into the first team at right tackle by becoming closer to God. He said it happened the day before camp after his mom told him that he needed to sharpen his focus.
“I started reading the bible every day and since then it’s been dramatic improvement after dramatic improvement after dramatic improvement,” he said.
He said his favorite verse is Psalm 23 and he reads different verses in Ephesians that detail wearing the armor of God.
“We going into battle on game day,” he said.
Back at GSU: DeMarcus Kirk practiced with Georgia State for the first time since returning to the team.
Kirk transferred to Georgia State from UAB and participated in the spring practices and summer workouts before leaving to return to Alabama to take care of an ailing family member.
He returned to the program late last week.
Miles said they need to determine how good of shape Kirk is in before they start working him into the rotation at running back.
Kirk redshirted at UAB last year.
