Georgia State’s football team went through an inconsistent practice on Thursday.
Coach Trent Miles was glad to see the defense create a few turnovers, but was unhappy with the mental mistakes such as illegal procedures and snaps rolling on the ground that he said must be eliminated before the season starts on Sept. 4 against Charlotte at the Georgia Dome.
“I don’t care if you are a third-team guy that just got here,” Miles said.
The defense looked better than the offense through most of practice, but the offense started scoring in the last 11-on-11 session. Wide receiver Robert Davis had a touchdown, running back Kyler Neal had a touchdown and quarterback Nick Arbuckle also scored.
Injury updates: Running back Marcus Caffey was held out of practice to be monitored for concussion-like symptoms.
Atkinson update: Tight end Hunter Atkinson will redshirt this year, but got some time with the first-team on Thursday during a few drills.
Starting tight end Joel Ruiz is still out and third-stringer Bill Teknipp hurt his quad. Because Keith Rucker can’t play every snap, Atkinson filled in.
Atkinson signed with Georgia in 2014, but left the team during the summer.
