DESTIN, Fla. - Jim McElwain is the reason that Mike Bobo is no longer at Georgia: When McElwain left Colorado State for Florida after last season, Bobo eventually replaced him, ending his long tenure as Georgia's offensive coordinator.
McElwain, attending his first SEC meetings on Tuesday, was asked what kind of situation Bobo inherits at Colorado State.
“He’s gotta overcome me screwing that thing up for the past few years,” McElwain said, in a vain effort at self-depreciation.
Colorado State went 10-2 last year, capping a three-year tenure by McElwain in which the team gradually improved after winning nine games in the three years prior to McElwain’s arrival. He parlayed it into the Florida job.
Before Bobo accepted the CSU job, he called McElwain, who said he came away impressed.
“What a quality person. I know after visiting with him how excited I was that they chose him,” McElwain said. “Because that place did a ton for me. Those kids there, I’m truly invested in them, and I think they got a great one. And I think he’ll be the guy to take it to the next step. I’m excited for him.”
McElwain and Bobo both run pro-style offenses, and were SEC offensive coordinators when plucked up by Colorado State. There was one major difference: McElwain is from that part of the world, Montana, while Bobo was born, raised and worked in Georgia.
But McElwain shrugged that off.
“Nah, that don’t matter,” McElwain said.
