Georgia Tech guard Shaquille Mason wasn’t quite good enough to be selected first-team All-ACC by either coaches or media. USA Today saw Mason, Tech’s three-year starter, differently, naming him a first-team All-American.

Mason, whom coach Paul Johnson said recently was probably the best offensive lineman he has coached in his tenure at Tech, is the first first-team All-American for the Yellow Jackets since defensive end Derrick Morgan made three different All-America first teams in 2009. He is Tech’s 60th first-team All-American and the third under Johnson, following defensive end Michael Johnson in 2008 and Morgan in 2009.

Mason, who did make All-ACC second team with both the coaches and media, has been Tech’s highest-graded offensive lineman in all 13 of the Yellow Jackets’ games this season. With his considerable help, Tech ranks No. 3 in rushing offense and No. 1 in third-down conversion rate.
