Georgia Tech B-back C.J. Leggett tore his ACL in Wednesday’s practice, coach Paul Johnson said after the spring scrimmage Friday night. It will sideline him for his redshirt freshman season, a significant blow as he was expected to be the starter at the primary running back position.

“We’ll miss C.J. He’d been working hard,” Johnson said. “I feel bad for him. But you’ve got to go with a next man up mentality.”

The injury is doubly troubling because his expected backup, early-enrollee freshman Quaide Weimerskirch, is out into the season after a foot injury that required surgery. The likely starter is now Marcus Allen, who was moved to B-back midway through the spring to provide depth after Weimerskirch’s injury.

Allen, a redshirt junior, came to Tech as a B-back, then moved after one season to linebacker. He switched again to wide receiver last season. Friday night, he ran 14 times for 77 yards and also caught two passes for 42 yards.

“It’s a big blow, but you just move on, you don’t dwell on it,” Johnson said. “They’re not going to cancel the season for us or anything. Marcus did some good things.”
