Kevin Ware has committed to transfer to Georgia State.

Ware, formerly a guard at Louisville, told the AJC on Saturday that he “feels like it’s a perfect fit for me. Coach (Ron) Hunter is doing a great job and I get to be close to home.”

Ware played at Rockdale County High School and originally committed to Tennessee when Bruce Pearl coached there. After Pearl was fired, Ware signed with Louisville. A 6-2 guard, he averaged 3.1 points per game at Louisville. His mother still lives in Conyers.

He was a key member of the 2012-13 Cardinals team that won the national championship at the Georgia Dome. However, he sustained a broken right leg during that tournament, a gruesome injury that caused him to miss the final few games.

He became an inspiration for the team and returned this season, playing in nine games before opting to sit out the rest of the season. Ware said that he was recently given a clean bill of health by his doctors. He will finish the semester at Louisville on May 25 and then return to Atlanta to begin training.

Ware said that he will petition the NCAA for immediate eligibility to play in the 2014-15 season.

Ware said that he can play either the point or off-guard and that Hunter told him that he plans on posting him up a lot because he is a bigger guard. Hunter isn’t allowed to comment until Ware applies to Georgia State.

Ware said that he has always been a good defensive player but that his shooting has improved after working on his technique at Lousville, where he hit 41.7 percent of his field-goal attempts, including 40.5 percent of his 3-pointers his sophomore year.

“I can give it to you on both ends of the floor,” he said.

Ware said Georgia State’s success last year in going 17-1 and winning the Sun Belt’s regular-season title was also a factor in his decision.

If Ware is granted immediate eligiblity by the NCAA, the Panthers would have a tremendous backcourt composed of he, Ryan Harrow and R.J. Hunter, the Sun Belt’s player of the year last year. Ware and Harrow played together on the AAU Celtics.
