Georgia Tech quarterback Justin Thomas practiced Wednesday after he had been previously held out for precautionary reasons. Thomas was slightly dinged in the team’s scrimmage Saturday.
After backing up Vad Lee last season in his redshirt freshman season, Thomas is preparing to take over the starting job this fall.
“I think he’s had a decent camp,” coach Paul Johnson said. “He’s done O.K.”
He gave another evaluation of “O.K.” to Thomas’ ball-handling, which in the past has been a weak spot for him. He made mention, too, that Thomas has the quickest throwing release of any quarterback at Tech since Johnson’s hire.
“Sometimes he has a hard time seeing (over the offensive line, due to his 5-foot-11 height), but when he can see, he can throw the ball,” Johnson said.
Both Thomas and Byerly received a heavy dose of praise from guard Trey Braun for their leadership. While they play a position that has expectations of leadership, Thomas is fairly reserved and Byerly came to Tech as a walk-on and has had to fight his way up the depth chart.
Still, “with those two, I think you’ve got some great leadership,” Braun said. “Tim’s always saying, ‘Let’s get together,’ ‘Let’s go to church,’ ‘Let’s go eat.’ Both of them are really blowing me away, especially with Tim coming on, walking on. He didn’t have to do any of that. He’s really put it all on himself. He and Justin are leading us well.”
