Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson was named one of 20 semifinalists for the Maxwell Football Club Coach of the Year Award. He is one of three coaches from the ACC, along with Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher and Duke’s David Cutcliffe.
Going into the Georgia game Nov. 29, the Yellow Jackets are No. 18 in the country and have won nine games for the first time since the 2009 season. The Jackets, who lead the ACC in 13 different categories, were picked to finish fifth in the ACC Coastal Division in a preseason media poll and didn’t receive a single vote in either the Associated Press or USA Today coaches polls. Finalists will be named Dec. 9.
Johnson will also be a candidate for ACC coach of the year, an award he previously won in 2008 and 2009.
