Georgia State’s Abigail Tere-Apisah became the first tennis player in school history to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA singles championship when opponent Kristie Ahn of Stanford retired in the second set of the women’s tournament on Friday in Athens.
Tere-Apisah was leading 6-3, 1-0 when Ahn quit. Panthers coach Robin Stephenson said the temperatures were climbing on the courts.
Tere-Apisah was trailing 3-0 before rallying to take the first set.
Tere-Apisah is now guaranteed to have the best finish by a GSU individual athlete in NCAA championship history.
She and partner Masa Grgan will play in doubles at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Her next singles match will be at on Saturday. She will face either Duke’s Beatrice Capra or Georgia’s Silvia Garcia.
