On the heels of the cancellation of Georgia Tech’s game against Central Florida this weekend, the team will not try to find a replacement game and play it during its open date.
Tech will keep its open date, which is Oct. 7, a week before the Yellow Jackets' trip to Miami. That game has been moved from Oct. 12 to Oct. 14. A team spokesman confirmed the decision Tuesday, a day after the Jackets' game scheduled for Saturday at UCF in Orlando was cancelled because of the effects of Hurricane Irma.
Speculation picked up with Indiana’s decision to seek a game for Oct. 7, which is the Hoosiers’ open date, after its game this weekend against Florida International was cancelled. On its face, a matchup between the Hoosiers and Jackets seemed a possibility. Indiana has since scheduled Charleston Southern for that date.
However, Tech is in a different position than Indiana. After the loss of its game with FIU, Indiana now only has five home games, which are revenue generators for athletic departments. Tech’s game against UCF, on the other hand, was a road game. Further, Tech will be in the middle of its ACC schedule, at which point the appeal of a non-conference game against a power-conference opponent is limited compared with the value of an open date to rest for a potentially critical game at Miami.
