With its 15th consecutive day of practice, Georgia Tech completed its camp portion of the preseason Saturday morning. Players checked out of the team hotel and were free until Monday, when the Yellow Jackets will begin preparing for the season opener against Alcorn State Sept. 3 at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Friends and family waited for players on Callaway Plaza outside the stadium to whisk players away following the scrimmage Saturday.
“It’s my last one, so I’m glad it’s done,” defensive tackle Adam Gotsis said. “But, a lot of work to do. Found out who’s really about playing and seen a bit of movement on the depth chart and things like that.”
Gotsis praised the play of linemates Francis Kallon, Patrick Gamble and Jabari Hunt-Days in camp. The four make a strong tackle rotation, with Gamble possibly playing at end, also.
Quarterback Justin Thomas said the last few practices of camp were the best that the offense had. That included the wide receivers and A-backs and their perimeter blocking. Thomas said that “the last few days, they’ve been getting their guys (on the ground) and doing what they’re supposed to do.”
Offensive tackle Errin Joe saw similar progress from his position group. Joe said the line watched video cut-ups of the line’s play against Georgia, Florida State and Mississippi State this past week as a reminder of its often dominant play in those games.
“That’s definitely what we’re going towards,” Joe said. “We’ve seen a little light (Saturday) with it, but I’m encouraged.”
Sunday will be the first day off the team has had since camp opened.
“You’re here for football,” Gotsis said, “so it doesn’t really matter if you don’t get a day off.”
The semester also begins Monday.
Asked if he was ready, Thomas replied, “I’ve got no choice. I might as well get ready.”
