Georgia Tech defensive end Tyler Stargel has a year of eligibility remaining, but he has decided to conclude his career Saturday against Georgia.

The redshirt junior from Orange Beach, Ala., has played in 34 out of a possible 38 games in three seasons, starting two games last season. He has played mostly in a special-teams capacity. He came back this season from tearing ligaments in his ankle last season, which required him to miss spring practice. He said he is still not completely recovered and doubts he ever will be.

“I just was thinking about going through another offseason, what it would be like physically and mentally for me,” he said. “I’m just ready to kind of move on. It’s not a bad thing at all.”

Stargel, who will graduate in December with a management degree, said he is not interested in transferring and using his final year of eligibility elsewhere. In fact, he said he plans to move to Auburn, Ala., to be near his girlfriend and has job interviews lined up. He’ll participate in senior day festivities prior to Saturday’s game.

“Just this whole week, I’ve been trying to take in every little thing, just everything from walking to the field, walking back, just little stuff that you’ll remember,” he said. “I don’t think I’ll be emotional or anything like that (on Saturday). I’ll just be excited and pumped up and ready to help try to win the game.”
